Sample Costs,
Line by Line

Real sample fees by category, what the money actually pays for, whether free samples are a red flag, and how many revision rounds to budget before bulk.

How much does a sample actually cost?

Across our 65-style catalogue, sample fees run from US$25 to US$80 per piece. The spread is not arbitrary pricing — it tracks construction complexity almost exactly. A printed tee sits at US$25. A lined satin varsity jacket with chenille patches sits at US$80.

Here is the real distribution by category from our own product pages.

CategorySample feeBreakdown across our catalogue

Men's sets & tracksuitsUS$25 – 80US$25 on 1, US$30 on 1, US$50 on 6, US$60 on 4, US$80 on 4
Hoodies & sweatshirtsUS$50 – 80US$50 on 4 styles, US$80 on 12 styles
JacketsUS$50 – 80US$50 on 1 style, US$80 on 15 styles

Why is a jacket sample three times the price of a tee sample?

Because you are not paying for fabric — you are paying for pattern work and setup. A tee has four pattern pieces. An MA-1 bomber has the shell, lining, quilted interlining, two rib components, pocket bags and facings, plus a two-way zip that has to be sourced in the right length and colour.

The sample room also runs differently from the production line. A line operator sews one operation hundreds of times. A sample operator builds the entire garment alone, which is slower and requires a far higher skill level.

What is actually inside the sample fee?

Most suppliers quote a sample fee without explaining it, which makes it look like a margin grab. It is usually not. Here is what the money covers.

The critical point is that pattern making and decoration setup are one-time costs. Once your pattern exists and your screens are burned, a repeat sample of the same style costs a fraction of the first one.

Cost componentWhat it covers
Pattern makingDrafting or adapting the block to your measurements. The largest single component on a new style.
FabricMinimum cut length is far more than one garment needs. You pay for usable yardage, not one piece.
Decoration setupScreens, embroidery digitising, puff print moulds. Charged once, reused in bulk.
Sample room labourSenior operators, not line operators. Slower and more skilled per piece.
TrimsZips, labels, drawcords bought in small quantities at retail-level pricing.

Should the sample fee be refundable?

Any sample fee already paid is deducted when you place the subsequent order. This is a common arrangement and worth insisting on, but read the condition carefully: credited against bulk is not the same as refunded on request.

What you should be wary of is a supplier offering free samples with no conditions at all. Sampling has a genuine cost — pattern labour, fabric minimums, setup. A supplier absorbing all of it either builds it into your unit price invisibly, or is a trading company passing a factory-made stock sample off as your sample.

How long should a sample take?

Most of our styles run a 7-day sample lead time. That clock starts when artwork, measurements and fabric selection are all confirmed — not when you first make contact.

The realistic total from first enquiry to sample in hand is usually 2 to 3 weeks, because spec confirmation takes longer than production. If you send a reference garment and clear artwork on day one, you compress that significantly.

How many sample rounds should you budget for?

Budget for two. The first sample confirms construction and proportion. The second confirms the adjustments you asked for, which almost always exist — sleeve length, body width, rib tension, print placement.

Brands that get it right in one round are usually those who sent a physical reference garment rather than only a sketch. Measurements taken from a garment you already own and like remove most of the guesswork from the first attempt.

At US$25 to US$80 per round, two rounds on a hoodie is US$100 to US$160 of development cost before you commit to bulk. That is the number worth planning against, not the single-sample figure.

Quick answers

Is the sample fee refundable?

Any sample fee already paid is deducted when you place the subsequent order; it is an order deduction rather than a cash refund. Ask any supplier to confirm which of the two they mean, in writing.

Why do suppliers charge for samples at all?

Pattern making, fabric minimums and decoration setup are real costs incurred before any bulk order exists. Our fees run US$25 to US$80 depending on construction.

Can I get a sample of an existing style without customisation?

Yes, and it is cheaper because no pattern work is needed. This is the fastest way to check our construction quality before committing to a custom development.

How long does a sample take?

7 days on most styles after artwork, measurements and fabric are confirmed. Allow 2 to 3 weeks from first enquiry to sample in hand, because spec confirmation is usually the longer part.
